Sandboxie.ini has incorrect format in Vista since 3.24?

Now I have a problem.

When I tried to manual edit (since v. 3.24) in my Vista, the format for the .ini is all screwed up somehow and everything is spaced? Why is this so? However this doesn't happen when I install it on my XP system, where it's lined correctly line by line?

My guess is that you are using a conventional text editor to edit the file in XP.
By conventional text editor, I mean something like notepad.
I am also guessing that you are using something other than notepad to edit the file in Vista.

Take a look at this:

Ok, shouldn't that be included as a default in sandboxie? Cause I usually edit it with notepad because its the easiest thing. It's a pain in the ass when you try to alphabetize your forced programs or something like that. Otherwise I'll go back to 3.21 But thanks that should solve the problems very nicely.
Other program recommendations and tech details?

Hi noob Sb user question:

I read in this thread:

Quote:
You need to open you sandboxie.ini in something other than notepad++ and then add this under your "Global" settings.

I forget why you need to do this but it should be in these forums somewhere.

I am sure someone else might remember why.

Hope this helps

What other program is suggested and recommended to open the sandboxie.ini in order to add ByteOrderMark=yes ?

Where exactly should ByteOrderMark=yes be placed "under your "Global" settings".... on the line immediately under "Global Settings"? Do I need to put a space before the entry or does it start immediately on the line etc?

Rgds

The solution to your problem is very simple.

Install v3.22, where it's the last version that has the correct format

Add ByteOrderMark=yes under Global Settings, doesn't matter which line as long as it's under Global Settings, no space.

Then install newest version, problem fixed.

Use your brain more.

I don't think there is any need for that last comment Rolling Eyes

I am in fact already using v3.28

I had already tried adding ByteOrderMark=yes with Wordpad on the line immediately under Global settings, saving the change, and then opening in Notepad++ same 'NUL' spacings formatting appear [it was no different].

I had already tried adding ByteOrderMark=yes on the line directly beneath Global Settings following on from the first 'NUL' and saving, again...the same issue when opening in Notepad++

I have already tried Wordpad as the initial editor and viewer once ByteOrderMark=yes changes are made.

That's why I request help - I thought this was a support forum not a slag off forum Laughing

So I ask again...

What editor are you recommending, and where exactly do I place the ByteOrderMark=yes? On the first line after Global Settings [yeah got that OK], but delete the 'NUL' and then paste over the top OR keep the 'NUL' and paste afterwards?

Any suggestions as to what I am doing wrong.

[I am running 3.28 on XP myself - the original post just seemed like a good place to post as it was to do with the same 'NUL' issue]

Thanks,

Swarf

You are making things more needlessly complicated than they need to be.

Why use other editors to give yourself more hassles? My methods is the fastest and easiest way to fix this. After that you don't need any other editors than notepad.

What I did was added ByteOrderMark=yes on the very last line under Global Settings when using v3.22 by using notepad, then installed new version to overwrite it.

This is really easy, you can do it.

Swarf, consider that in most cases, you don't really need to edit Sandboxie.ini manually, so you could just leave things as they are.

On the other hand, if you insist to edit Sandboxie.ini, I suggest an easier solution for you would be to try to find some other text editor that does not get easily confused by UNICODE text files.

I recommend TextPad.

I do not have MS Notepad installed on this XP computer - only Notepad++

I uninstall v3.28 and installed v3.22 as AnonymousX has suggested.

I find that due to the nature of Notepad++ I still cannot get sandboxie.ini edited and saved correctly so as not to display the 'NUL' format.

I reinstalled v3.28

In MikeH's post he links to:

http://sandboxie.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=2281&highlight=byte+order+mark

We can read in this thread that MikeJ noticed the same problem since build .25 [ie Notepad++ displays the 'NUL' formatting of sandboxie.ini]

His fix was to use the editor called EditPad and to add ByteOrderMark=yes under "Global" settings for sandboxie.ini

I installed EditPad [sandboxed] and sure enough when I open sandboxie.ini the formatting is straightforward ie without the 'NULs'.

I then used EditPad to add ByteOrderMark=yes in the suggested location and saved the change, and then recovered [to same folder] the sandboxie.ini and reloaded the config in Sandboxie Control.

Opening sandboxie.ini this time in Notepad++ still results in the NUL format being displayed.

I was under the impression that Notepad++ would display the sandboxie.ini correctly once the ByteOrderMark=yes was added, but I find this not the case.

In the same thread DrorHarari talks about Notepad++, platforms and coding [cheers DrorHarari your explanation helps] - but this is new ground for me.

I just want to know if:

1/ Is it at all possible to edit the sandboxie.ini in Notepad++ so as to get rid of 'NUL' format?

2/ Any reason why editing and saving using EditPad and then opening with Notepad++ did not fix?

3/ Or will I have to install EditPad just to read sandboxie.ini's without NULs everywhere?

4/ If 3 is the case, can any other editors be recommended other than EditPad that I could install to edit sandboxie.ini eg editors that may be lighter and/or smaller and/or generally more useful and/or a better program?

Hopefully this explains this situation a bit better?

Cheers

Hi Tzuk

Thanks for dropping by - appreciated

I agree with you that finding some other text editor that does not get easily confused by UNICODE text files' is the way to go.

The reason I want the ability to edit the sandboxie is that having read many of the resolved posts and others, some solutions are to custom edit the sb.ini - I have my computer setup with the similar programs as some of these posts, so may need to edit the sb.ini.

I have read extensively throughout this forum in order to attempt to get a better grip on Sandboxie - before installing it, and as a reference now.

I consider my self a more 'advanced' computer user in general - but hey, like I said, this is new ground and I am eager to learn.

Thank you for your recommendation of TextPad editor - and I value your time in replying Exclamation

On my PC, Notepad is what automatically runs when editing the sandboxie.ini file, but I tried opening it in Notepad++ Portable - and it's a real mess, with all of those NULL's. Frankly, it's not worth it to me to try to figure out why NP++ messes-up when opening that file, but not another .ini file that I tried.

I also have installed Notepad2, which is a free Open Source program, available from a number of locations. You might try that one. It works fine, for me.

Yeah I had the same problem about a year ago with NP++, it just screws up when trying to read the sandboxie.ini file.
I personally found the best text editor out of every single one I've tested (including the ones listed above) was actually EditPad Pro. Clean, but packed full of features! Cool
And yes, it reads the sandboxie.ini file fine. Wink
