Awesome job! After allowing java.exe internet access, java applets load and work fine.
I'm still getting one unhandled exception when starting Firefox (same one as before), but I don't know what the ramifications are.

I experience that too.

Final update: That exception is OK and is actually caused by Sandboxie, to check if the cryptography services are available directly (e.g. if the OpenProtectedStorage setting is in effect) or if they have to be provided in a more roundabout way.
