The red X at the corner looks amateurishly done. The red X should be imposed directly over the yellow icon instead of using a tranparent x in a clear square box.

If so, prefers the faded tray icon.

What about these? I tested them. They look OK (I'm no artist).

FadedTray -- nice, thanks.

wraithdu -- have you examined how your icons looks when resized to 16x16 ?
I was experimenting with a few other variants, before I added the black box around the red X. And my point is that when resized to 16x16, it's hard to discern the red X, unless there is a black box around it.

So the bottom line is this. I agree it's not the most pleasing icon, from an aesthetic viewpoint. However, it does convey its meaning quite clearly. You don't have to squint at the icon to see if it's still darkened or went back to fully highlighted: Instead, either there is a clear red X or there isn't one.

For the few minutes a week that someone might use Disable Forced Programs, I think I've already spent too much time with this.

tzuk, agree, I think we can all live with what you decide which is certainly much better than not doing anything at all as in previous version.

Let's move on ! Very Happy

Well, here's 2 other options, my last contribution to this. If you feel like using them cool, if not no big deal. I checked them, and they're pretty easy to tell the difference. I used the darkening from your first idea, and made the X cover just about the whole icon.
