| A-Squared AV not protecting in Sandboxie (Resolved 3.43.21!) |

Windows 7 Pro (32), IE8, PC Tools Firewall Plus free (100%, and FAST!), A2 paid (A-squared anti-malware 4.5... (fully updated)).
Sbie 3.43.15 (100% clean install), and same with 3.43.16 (upgrade). Doesn't make any difference if A2 is allowed or disabled for sbie install, and A2 was detected/allowed in Security on install (double checked). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ When I open my test A2 website http://www.vitacost.com/ in sbie- I get NO A2 warning! Then when I open my test A2 website http://www.vitacost.com/ in regular IE8- I get the proper A2 warning. Testing Note: If I go into A2 Host Rules, and delete the Vitacost.com rule- I have to reboot before it takes effect! Scott |

A2 was recognized/added in Soft Compatibility on sbie install, then verified in Security/Privacy "(--)". |

I addressed this problem not too long ago, in beta 3.41:
http://www.sandboxie.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=3990 Perhaps a2 changed again, or maybe something changed in Sandboxie. I will try to look into this again. |

Well I just tried with version 3.43.18 and it works as expected. I think I was using Surf protection, then the small "import hosts" link at the bottom. Then I get a dialog box where I can enter web addresses to "block and notify". And they were blocked both in a sandboxed and un-sandboxed IE.
Of course I enabled A2 in Sandboxie Software Compatibility. In what way is this different than what you did? |

I just did an upgrade install to 3.43.19, and A2's still not protecting in sbie? I created the rule to block http://www.vitacost.com/ outside of sbie- No need to add this link to "import hosts", as it will be blocked automatically. -Then I open sbie & this link, with no problem. For an added test- I added vitacost.com to "import hosts/block notify", and was able to open with no problem in sbie. Were you using XP, or Windows 7?- I "down graded" to win 7 Pro, since WE solved this same A2 no-protect issue in XP/ 3.41! |

I guess Windows 7 was the key factor here, because I can reproduce the problem there.
However, in my experience, A2 isn't really blocking hosts even without Sandboxie. Outside the sandbox, I get a notification about the blocked host, but the browser connects anyway. But, I only get the notification once for every web site. I can close the browser, re-open it and go to the same web site, and this time it would connect without a notification at all. As for inside the sandbox: I don't get the notification, and the browser connects anyway. But since it seems to me that this A2 functionality isn't working anyway, it doesn't make sense to try to fix Sandboxie to support it better. |

| Why A-squared/OA++ needs to be able to protect in sandboxie! |

1. The web guard test is partly to show that A2 is NOT protecting in sbie!- I can "unknowlingly" visit a malicious site, copy the URL & send it in an emal to a friend! I do this all the time! 2. Many of us A2/OA++ (Online Armor++) users open their POP3 (Outlook, Outlook Express, Windows Live Mail...) email/attachments in sbie!- this way if there is a virus..., it can't write to your computer... -If I open an email with an "un-detected" virus, and then "unknowlingly" Fw: it to other email friends...!!! 3. If A2 isn't protecting in sbie, then it stands to reason that OA++ probably isn't protecting either!?- As OA++ uses parts of the A2 engine! I can post on the OA++ forum..., if you'd like them to test it? 4. Then we just need to use a little imagination, and add zero day malware to the Equation...! A2's excellent surf/malware protection is rated #1 in independent tests, and I don't want to switch!! |

You just completely ignored the part where I say that A2 doesn't protect my Windows 7, with or without Sandboxie.

| How I install A-Squared on Windows 7.... |

Sorry, I didn't understsnd what you meant? You can't very well fix sbie, if you can't get A2 working! I now have A2 working good on my 2 Win 7 computers (2nd try). Did your lic expire? Is A2'S Security Center showing all Green Checks (see #2 below!)? I did have problems with A2's quirky installer, that I later got a work-a-round...! I'd suggest trying a 100% clean uninstall(CCleaner...)/reinstall?! Right click A2 TB icon & "Exit Background Guard", BEFORE uninstall! Bottom line!- A2's installer gets ahead of itself, and jumps prematurely ahead to their Wizard...! From memory- BEFORE doing Wizard, I!- 1. Click on the hidden window on my taskbar, and click Finish... 2. Click on the White Flag taskbar icon, and click to Allow A2.../also check don't ask again (this could be your problem?) a. I also click on the taskbar double up arrow ^/Customize, & "Show icon and Notifications" on- A2, Firewall, Action Center, and Windows Updates! 3. NOW I can go ahead & complete the Wizard- do Downloads & a scan... 4. I do a reboot before BEFORE I change any settings (I do this with ALL installs!). 5. I wait 3min for the White Flag icon to appear, before I uninstall/install. a. At 5-6min Svchost does some frenetic activity..., that brings my computer to a virtual processing standstill (Process Explorer)!? Not a good time to reboot...! I have a noisy WD Raptor 10k HD (love it!), that alerts me to stuff... |

The A2 installation is fine. As I said,
I do get the popup box notification at the lower right corner, telling me that A2 is about to block some web site. However, the web site is not actually blocked! And if I make any further attempts to reconnect to that same web site, then I no longer get the notification at all. All this happens "ouside" Sandboxie, of course. |

I tried it on my desktop, and sure enough A2 is allowing vitacost.com even though it is blocked in Host Rules! ~~ I then tried vitacost.com on my laptop (exact same win7/Pctools FW/A2, but no MBAM or AntiVir on demand)- A2 recognized vitacost.com as a bad host, and I blocked/rule. Vitacost.com did Not open in regular IE8, but did open in sbie? I just made a post about this on the A2 forum? ~~~~~~~~ Q?- By any chance, do you have MBAM or AntiVir on-demand on your win 7 test computer? |

Alright, so the problem with A2 itself not blocking stuff caused us to side-track a bit from the problem of Sandboxie+A2 incompatibility on Windows 7.
I gave it another look and I added one more resource exclusion to the A2 settings in Sandboxie. Please try version 3.43.21. If you already have the A2 thing enabled in Software Compatibility, then you don't need to do anything else, except upgrade to 3.43.21, and maybe restart your computer. |

1. I posted A2 not blocking in or out of sbie, on the A2 forum?- a. Others replied that they were having the same issue with win 7. 2. I uninstalled, and reinstalled A2?- It is working good, and blocking vitacost.com (then deleted rule). a.It's not the first time I've had issues with anti-malware..., after installing other AV's/applications on top of it! A reinstall on top of the other AV's... (doesn't seem to matter if they are on-demand or not?), usually fixes it!
I temp disabled A2's Guard, and installed 3.43.21?- vitacost.com was recognized & blocked in and out of sbie, and the rule kept working! Tzuk!- I appreciate the Good Fix! G'day Scott |
