Hi Everybody,

I would like to create a separate sandbox for each application I install under both windows XP and 7.

The idea is to kill off any virus/malware problems, stop running all the multiple sidecar exe files most
programs insist on installing and running, and keep the main OS clean - especially the registry.

Has anyone tried this with success?

This way I have total control over what is going on in my machine.

Of course people have tried it. I have personally been doing it myself since I discovered Sandboxie.

I have individual sandboxes for different types of programs, Graphics, Media Players, Music, Internet, Misc, and then I also have program specific sandboxes as well, such as a Chromium sandbox that I delete every once in a while so I can go grab the latest version (from the Chromium Snapshots site) and install it into the sandbox.
I do the same thing with Firefox. Right now I have a Firefox 4 Beta sandbox so I can install the latest Firefox beta without it overwriting the latest stable build installed unsandboxed. I have one for Safari, one for Opera, blah blah...
I have a sandbox for installing games, for testing malicious stuff, etc.. It works just fine.

Just create a new sandbox, give it a name, and change any settings for the sandbox (if you wish). Then just right click a program installer and "Run Sandboxed".

sb726551, I think it's certainly possible to some extent, for example I have .NET framework installed in a sandbox for some apps I rarely use and don't want the overhead of .NET installed into Windows.

But I don't think you can really take this to extreme and expect to install everything into sandboxes. You're going to want some stuff out of the sandbox.

So basically I'm saying what SnD says, just create some sandboxes and experiment with it.

I do have a second question along this line.

Can you walk a sandboxed application from one computer with SandboxIE installed in it
over to a different computer with SanndboxIE installed and have it work?

If this can be done then this would allow a form of portable applications.

Generally yes but there are some caveats. For example if the program is installed into the C drive and you use it in a computer that doesn't have a C drive (unlikely, but possible).

Another example is the reghive files in the sandbox, Windows Vista/7 use a different reghive files than Windows XP/2000. You can use a sandbox created on Windows XP/2000 on Windows Vista/7, but not the other way around.

hi tzuk and SnDPhoenix....trying to install an app in a separate sandbox as described by SnDPhoenix on 8/11/10.
1. created new sandbox....TestSbox
2. right clicked application (freelaunchbar.exe) to run sandboxed
3. my Online Armor asks for ok to run

4. Error box pops - "freelaunchbar32.exe - Application Error"
"The exception unknown software exception (0x0eedfade) occurred in the application at location 0x7c812aGb
5.hit ok

6. Error Box pops "Application Error"
"Exception ElntOverflow in module HF_Hook.dll"

please advise me what is causing this error..thanks

i am running version 3.48 and xp pro...i have screen shots of the error boxes and Sandboxie Control if needed

It sounds like it might be a conflict with Online Armor?
I don't have much experience with Online Armor, but I know there are some running OA on this forum, maybe they'd be able to help better than I can.

But just for the record, if I remember correctly, in OA you have to add every component of Sandboxie to the "Whitelist" or whatever its called in OA...

i tried entering all components of sandboxie into online armor's programs (white list) but that did not solve my problem. also, i unloaded online armor but that too did not solve my problem.

I can't find any information on Google for hf_hook.dll. So try this, get Sandboxie version 3.49.12 here -

The 3.49 versions have an improvements to the Resource Access Monitor that we're going to need here.

Then turn on the Resource Access Monitor, per instructions here:

Then run (sandboxed) the installation the causes the problem.

Finally post the results of your Resource Access Monitor log here. Hopefully this will show the folder where HF_HOOK.DLL is coming from and maybe this will help us understand which software it belongs to.

Ahh, from your log, I can see that hf_hook.dll belongs to the program "Handy Folders".
Is this the same Handy Folders you're using?

Either way, we found the problem. Can you disable HF on your system to see if this fixes the problem?

hi tzuk...in reviewing the resource log i see Handy Folders in the app that is creating hl_hook.dll

i unloaded handy folders and was able to proceed to install an app in nu sandbox without app errors.

however, is there a way to keep handy folders loaded and avoid the problems i was experiencing ?

also, is there an easy process to copy sandbox settings from one sandbox to another?
