I just bought a HP Mini 110-4106TU that come loaded with windows7 starter, I immediately installed the sandboxie version 3.68 (32bit). When activate the "sandboxed web browser" after a few second, the screen went blank and came back with a frozen pixelated screen, then about a minute later, the computor went into a complete blue screen with white wordings that notify it is going into a crash memory dump......

Do you guys have any such experience, and is it because sandboxie is not compatible with windows7 starter.......

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Sorry to hear you're having trouble. I don't think Sandboxie should be incompatible with Windows 7 Starter but perhaps you have some other software on the computer which is triggering the crash. Any other security software or drivers that are out of the ordinary?

Hi Tzuk,

Thank you for responding to my post. There was no any "special" software being installed, except Norton Internet Security that comes with the software package.

When the frozen screen re-appear after having gone blank, you can see a partial message that seems to say the Intel Graphic Display failed to do something......

If you can upload the minidump to some free file hosting service, I can download it and take a look. But I'm afraid that I can't promise I will have an answer, because some incompatibilities are due to subtle issues that aren't easily visible in a minidump file.

Thank you for uploading the minidump file. Analyzing the dump file shows the crash occurs in the driver igdkmd32.sys which is the display driver, crash error number 116:

VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE (116)
Attempt to reset the display driver and recover from timeout failed.

A Google search shows many people are experiencing this problem (regardless of Sandboxie) and the advice is usually to upgrade graphics drivers through this web link:

http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/detect

So hopefully updating the graphics drivers will fix your problem.

The HP support website checked and confirmed that I have the latest driver installed for the "Intel Graphics Media Acelerator 3600 series".

I download the latest driver anyway, and re-installed it. Unfortunately, the issue still exist.

I then install the Comodo Internet Security (Free version) which has the sandboxing capabilities, I have no problem running program in its sandboxes.

So, I am not sure if this is purely a software incompatibilities issue......?

Perhaps Sandboxie is not fully compatible with Windows 7 Starter, and the crash in the graphics driver is just the symptom. If that's the case then it would be something that I can fix. If it really is an issue with the graphics driver, I'm not sure that I will be able to resolve it. I'll post an update soon after I've had a chance to look into this.

I checked out Windows 7 Starter but as far as I can tell, it is identical to other editions of 32-bit Windows 7, for all the things that Sandboxie needs to do. So the incompatibility does indeed seem to be specific to the graphics driver, but I'm not sure I can get access to a system where I can reproduce the problem. Nevertheless I would like to know exactly which graphics driver it is.

Is this the one?
Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 3600 Series for Windows 7* 32-bit (version 8.14.8.1065)

So, does the crash happen with every program you start, or just the web browser?

No, so far, I have seen it happening to IE and Firefox browser and .jpg file only.

How about if you add a wildcard star in each of the following settings?

Sandbox Settings > Resource Access >
... File Access > Full Access
... Registry Access > Direct Access
... IPC Access > Direct Access
... Window Access > Direct Access
You can use the Edit/Add button to add a single wildcard star: *

Also go to Sandbox Settings > Restrictions > Low-Level Access and mark all the checkboxes
Same for Sandbox Settings > Restrictions > Hardware Access

The problem might occur because Sandboxie could be preventing one part of the graphics driver from talking to the other part of the graphics driver. If you add all these exclusion settings, and the problem goes away, then we will have a direction to explore here.
