Empty sandbox doesnt make a difference.
Sandboxie Version 3.50 64-bit
Windows 7 Professional 64-bit

Ever since the new version came out i have been unable to run a game (mmorpg called Nostale) via sandboxie that was working fine for a long time. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling both the latest version and version 3.50 (which was the one that worked fine till now) many many times.

I keep getting a "NostaleX.dat - System Error : The program cant start because C:\Program Files\Sandbox.DLL is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem"

I HAVE reinstalled. So many times iv lost count! Can someone please help me? Iv searched the web for a program similar to sandboxie but came up with nothing.

Someone else recently reported the same problem with the same game:

http://www.sandboxie.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=9765

Interesting.

The workaround solution was to put a dummy Sandboxie.DLL file somewhere. Please see the other topic for more details.

Also, I will try to reproduce the problem and see if I can fix it better.

Call me an idiot, but I didn't even know there was a Sandboxie.dll file, in fact I cant find that dll on my system anywhere, only Sandboxie dlls I see are SbieDll.dll and SbieMsg.dll Question
Btw OP, you should upgrade back to v3.52 Razz

Installed V3.52 again but this throws out yet another error:

"[#] C:\Program Files (x86)\Nostale(UK)\nostalex.dat[#]
This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel."

Im no IT expert so please excuse my ignorence, i have no idea how or where i should even attempt to fix that error...

As to the dummy Sandbox.DLL fix, i tried it after reading that post but I don't know which of the files he used to create it, the one i tried didnt work... which was when I installed V3.52 again.

Thanks for the help

SnD, I think you didn't look in the other topic.

Ceseux, you should probably copy the one from the Program Files\Sandboxie\32 folder as NoStale is probably a 32-bit program.

And about this "yet another error" about the missing association. When you use Run Sandboxed to run the game, try running it as Administrator. It may help with this problem.

Hopefully I will experience all these problems when I test the game myself and will be able to fix them.

Hi all,

I have the same problem Ceseux had when saying "yet another problem", which is :

"[#] C:\Program Files (x86)\Nostale(UK)\nostalex.dat[#]
This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel."

But did not find a solution to this. Like Tzuk said, I tried running it as Administrator, but it didn't change anything. Has someone another idea ? =/

I am still planning to look into the various issues that this game exposes. I should be able to get to this soon.

I hope you'll find soon, I tried many different things without any solution appearing. ^^'

It's weird being asked to associate a file which is a .dat, because I thought they didn't need any association.
Maybe selecting a txt program would resolve that ? What's more, when I go to the Default Programs control panel, there isn't .dat in there. Really, I don't see why the program doesn't launch.

(PS : Sorry for my bad english, I'm a foreigner. ^^')

Actually I did get around to trying this yesterday ... And I'm sorry to report I saw none of these problems. I tried on a fresh copy of 64-bit Windows 7, both version the official 3.52 and the new-and-improved version 3.53. (I haven't released 3.53 yet.) Both worked fine.

Uh ...

Maybe I'm wrong (I don't know many things about computers ^^'), but could it be that in the version 3.52 I've installed, there is a folder which name is 32 ? Doesn't it need to be a 64 one, because of the "64-bit" Windows 7 ? In that case, maybe the SbieSvc.exe file is "wrong" ?

Or, if that doesn't come from the program, what should one do when seeing the message of associating a .dat file ? (I think we're not in the only case where this message appears ... ^^') Is there anything to do about that ?

The 64-bit versions of SbieSvc and SbieDll are in the main Sandboxie folder. The 32 sub-folder contains 32-bit version copies of these programs.

Before version 3.52, there was no 32-bit folder, and the 32-bit version of SbieDll was called SbieDllX.dll and was placed in the main folder.

So there is definitely a change in version 3.52 in that instead of trying to load
C:\Program Files\Sandboxie\SbieDllX.dll
it now tries to load
C:\Program Files\Sandboxie\32\SbieDll.dll

But this change seems to work properly for everyone, except in a few esoteric cases, like in your case. And the problem is that I just don't know what to do to reproduce the problem.

* * *

But one point that comes to my mind now. I didn't actually click the START button in NosTale. I used "Run from Start menu", started NosTale, let it update, and it all seems to go well. Should I have clicked the START button?

Sorry that I didn't mention that : Yeah, the message appears right when I click on the Start button ! Before that, the whole thing seems to work. It's just this "last" step that doesn't function. =/
I hope that you'll see by yourself what is the problem, but perhaps it won't work again ...

About the 32 / 64-bit, I understand now. So my computer isn't using the file in the 32 folder, but the one in the main folder. =/
Then I don't see what it could be, 'really hope that you'll find something. TT'

Alright, then there is still hope that I can reproduce this ... Smile
I can't check it immediately but will try this later today and will post my findings.

I'm sorry but I couldn't reproduce the problem. I did see that clicking the START button launches NoStaleX.dat but the program starts up correctly. It crashes a few seconds later, but the same crash happens outside the sandbox -- I would guess due to missing graphics drivers. But the point is that NoStaleX.dat starts without complaining about missing DLLs or about missing program associations. I don't really know what else to say about this.

Arh ... I see then, thanks for your help ! ^^'

Just one thing : Do you think you can see on your computer what is the program which is associated with NostaleX.dat ? Maybe I can do the same as you'll find. Trying to copy the functional version may help me launching this little .dat. =/

Thank you again !
